Dreams. We all have them, but sometimes life gets in the way and those dreams are deferred … or forced to change. Life changes with it. Shifting gears.
For me, the change began with my decision to become a midlife student majoring in Photography. As often happens, on my foray through those core requirements, I stumbled into two classes that changed the course of my life: sculpture and an odd summer class on the art and craft of Steampunk – a mix of styles that can be described as the Victorian era meeting the Industrial Age.
Touching stone and wire, I found myself listening to the stone, to the metal, as they told me what they wanted to be. In the Steampunk class — the first of its kind at that time – I found myself putting my lifelong “recycle” and “re-purpose” skills to work creating whimsical weaponry and one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces fabricated from recycled materials or natural stone and glass.
People took notice. Thus was born Gemini Dream Designs.
My first Steampunk show was a culmination of the Steampunk course; that was quickly followed by a month-long showing in Nashville deemed a “Pick of the Week” by the Nashville Scene in 2011. My mom and I were later showcased at MidSouthCon in Memphis in 2012, where I exhibited at the Con’s art show. Mom was a costuming panelist throughout the weekend.
This fledgling company dovetailed nicely with my mother’s long-time love for and experience in costuming and design. What was a four-decade long hobby transformed itself into specialized costuming: Steampunk, Renaissance, Medieval, Sci-Fi costumes, and more.
Mom, now retired (sort of) from her lifelong career as an editor, had been creating costumes for my children and myself for years; now that craft was merged into Gemini Dream Designs. All work involving textiles is her domain, including the headpieces and accessories that will be showcased here in the coming months.
